Canton, Day Ketterer, Downtown, Millennium Building

IMG_8991

Last Friday at 3:40 I headed downtown to Day Ketterer Law firm to witness the unveiling of historic documents dating back to the 19th Century. Jennifer Novotny, Director of Client Services & Development invited us to attend this event. She instructed me to park in the parking deck in the rear of the Millennium Building located at 200 Market Avenue N. Suite 300 Canton, OH 44702. When I arrived I immedietly found another Canton treasure. IMG_8989

It appears as though someone owned a house downtown, and saw the need to build a business around it. The result is this outcropping, or topper, if you will.

When I arrived at Day Ketterer, Jennifer was there to greet me at the elevator doors and escorted me into the area where the unveiling would take place. We were witnessing history in the making as Day Ketterer marks its 142 year in business in Canton, Ohio. Our city directories reveal their name was Lynch, Day, & Lynch in 1878. They made this unveiling a true event, with hors d’oeuvres. The purpose of the event was two-fold. One, the firm unveiled a new tag line: Modern Law Since 1872. Two, the documents which flanked the tag line on either side. IMG_8992Jennifer Novotny spoke first, explaining the inception of the project, and the new tag line. 1465347_10151879816458229_937520039_n Next, Rob Roland, Managing Partner spoke on the new tag line, and its simplicity.

It was great to see so many people interested in the history of their company.

Day Ketterer was founded 5 years after a young lawyer arrived here in Canton. A young veteran of the War Between the States. A young man, not yet known on the national scene, who has his eye on the prettiest girl in town. William McKinley would meet William Day, and a lifetime bond of friendship would form.

IMG_8882 When we are with our friends, we feel empowered, and comfortable. We help each other out, and help each other along the way… Only Sam Stone truly knows how he felt that Xmas 1933, in Canton, Ohio, when he gave such an incredible offer. This “A secret Gift” exhibit is like an old friend that has stopped by for a little visit. But we must cherish those times with this old friend, because those times will quickly pass away. When friends support each other, and work toward a common goal, the result is a wonderful Gift that we can Share with Stark County, with the world. Very Soon, the McKinley Presidential Library & Museum will invite you into our home to experience a piece of the Great Depression, the 1930’s, in Canton, Ohio, December 18, 1933, Dear Sir… More later…

Son, Citizen, Teacher, Citizen turned Soldier, Lawyer, Husband, Father, Congressman, Governor, President. It is so easy to visit the sights where William McKinley lived, and brush over the fact that he was a man of extreme integrity. In the 2008 election, one of the questions asked of the general public was: “Which candidate would you like to have a beer with?” Well, I wouldn’t want to have a beer with President McKinley (because I don’t drink beer) but I would love to have dinner with him? The point of the question was which candidate would you feel most comfortable chatting with, and which would you trust most. William McKinley has my vote for being trustworthy. Integrity, friendship, loyalty, are rare qualities these days, and when you find them, you hang onto them.

When you study any person, or thing, or idea in history, please consider what happened before the monuments were placed in their honor.
They did a tremendous amount of work to deserve their remembrance.

The list of President McKinley’s accomplishments are the results of him working, caring, and honoring the people around him. More later…
