On April 22, 2014 McKinley Presidential Library & Museum held its second of three preservation workshops.  The subject for this workshop is Letters & Photographs.

Preparing and teaching this workshop was very rewarding.  The participants were enthusiastic and asked great questions.  We had 30 people participate! We outgrew the library, and moved to the Everhard Auditorium.  100_7708

The focus was on our two missions here at the Museum; The Presidential papers, photographs, and artifacts of William McKinley, and the Archives of Stark County, and how to care for and store letters & photographs from your personal collection.

We hosted people from as far off as Steubenville & Dover!  Thank you to everyone who came, and participated in this successful series.

The third workshop: Furniture is Tuesday April 29th.

Just a boy here of 16 years in 1859…

In two years he will be Pvt. McKinley in the volunteer Army of the United States. This army raised to put down the rebellion and the secession of the southern states. In five years he will fight one of the hardest battles of the Civil War fought in the Shenandoah Valley.

Third Winchester or Opequon as it became known to the Southerners, was fought on and around September 19, 1864. This boy you see before you is innocent and loving. He is taught not to kill, not to steal, not to lie.

Yet, he will volunteer to fight for a cause which will require him to do at least one of these things. At this time he is not thinking of the training, advise, friendship, and experience he will receive during those four years between July 1861 and July 1865.

By the end of the war McKinley receives a commission of Major by brevet from President Lincoln “for gallant and meritorious services at the battles of Opequon, Ceder Creek, and Fisher’s Hill” just one month before Lincoln is taken by an assassin’s bullet.

Major McKinley will take these experiences and develop leadership skills which will carry him to the Capital City, Washington D.C. to represent a part of Ohio in Congress, and Columbus Ohio to represent Ohioans as governor, and finally go for the “Big Fish” becoming President of the United States.

But here, we keep him innocent, protected by his family for a little bit longer…

Boy goes to war…Boy meets girl…They become man and wife…
They leave legacy for Their Family & Stark County…

Mandy came in yesterday to share the legacy of her grandpa & grandma. She shared with me on the phone two days earlier that she had many images of Stark County taken and documented by her grandmother. I told her I would love to see them, and asked if she could share them with our archive. She was more than happy to share the legacy of her grandparents and their connection to Stark County. Mandy is a “scrapbooker” and she began her journey by organizing her family’s personal photos, and realizing she needed to organize the images of her county as well. She knew most of the locations from her grandmother’s collection, but there were some buildings in and around Canton, that she could not identify.

Tom Haas stepped in, sat with Mandy, and helped to identify nearly every image she had in question. Mandy is so pleased with this new found information! History & family are two passions that drive her to scan, clean-up, document, and share the wonderful collection her grandmother left.

Thank you Mandy, for your hard work, and big heart!

Thank you Tom, for your service to the McKinley Presidential Library & Museum, and Stark County!

All of the Ramsayer Research Library’s volunteers are priceless! They each bring their individual talents and personalities to our cause. They take their tasks and pour their hearts into them completely! They are very much appreciated!

Thank you to the Staff of the McKinley Presidential Library & Museum for the support!
